An essay on the practical, modern-day value of keeping the five precepts. As with most writings, it can lead one to ask questions that aren't answered in its limited space. Questions such as; "If the intentional killing of living beings violates one of the five precepts, then should Buddhists not drive cars, ask for rides in vehicles, ride bicycles or even walk quickly for fear of squashing ants and similar living beings that cross their paths?"
Presumably there's a moral, non-arbitrary cutoff point at which total compassion devolves into total impracticality, but as it stands, this essay on its own is probably not for casual public consumption, at least, not if its intended effect is to persuade an individual "ignorant" (in a good sense) of more in-depth Buddhist values, that Buddhism might be worth investigating.
For example, I haven't done enough research/meditation to answer that conundrum posed above, but I come across it every day while trying to live a compassionate vegan lifestyle.
The scope of the precepts must be understood in full, in my view, thoroughly through both guided meditation and repeated, honest analysis. Presumably the best people to ask are monks and nuns, as I'm sure these are common questions.

Ven. Ajahn Brahmavamso explains techniques for meditating. He (in my view) makes Buddhism and meditation more accessible to the Western mind than any other I've encountered to date (not that I've been looking that hard, mind you :-).
